This edition I bring you recent jobs as always but also a really nice article from ESPN relating money valuation and positions/players. It’s not a 5 lines read, it has lots of information and it’s quite interesting. You might try to see if something like that is doable for your favorite sport!

“Are attackers the most valuable players in soccer? Or do we just think they're the most valuable players because we're better able to measure everything they do? The answer is obvious and impossible”

How much is each position really worth in the Premier League?

New analytics competition. Another chance to shine.

Premier League salaries tell a clearer story about value than most tactical debates.

Using wage data as a proxy, Ryan O'Hanlon shows that while midfielders and forwards earn similar salaries on average, the gap widens fast once you look at starters and stars. Midfielders are crucial for making bad teams functional, but their value plateaus as teams get better.

At the top end of the league, spending shifts toward decisive impact near the goals. Elite attackers become dramatically more expensive than everyone else, reflecting their unique ability to win games on their own.

Defensive players and goalkeepers also gain value higher up the table, where structure protects them less and individual quality matters more. Interestingly, top teams spend nearly as much on goal suppression as they do on attack.

The data suggests midfielders raise a team’s floor, not its ceiling. Star attackers, meanwhile, raise ceilings and payrolls. The Premier League’s money ultimately confirms what analytics often imply: goals, and the players closest to them, are king.
