He talks about the evolution of baseball analytics, how Bayesian models tackle messy, hierarchical sports data, and what it's like to productionize models inside a major league front office.

Chris talks about the challenge of applying Bayesian models to high-frequency baseball data — things like pitch tracking over a decade, which results in datasets that are "not quite big data, but uncomfortably large." He points out that while machine learning methods like XGBoost are common, they often miss the mark due to the hierarchical and noisy nature of sports data. Bayesian methods are a better fit but bring computational pain, especially when using tools like Stan or PyMC with MCMC. One solution he mentions is compromising with variational inference or falling back to simpler models when sampling breaks — a common real-world tradeoff.
