New  jobs is Sports

Data science, Analytics and software jobs in sports analytics. As always, the most complete site to get all the relevant opportunities in one place!

This edition brings you the usual recent job openings, but also two excellent competitions where you can work with real data and build portfolio-ready projects. Even if you don’t participate formally, both challenges provide structure, datasets, and clear prompts that you can use to create serious applied work to showcase in interviews.

Jobs for you:

These were some of the uploaded in the last few days only! I’m seeing a rise in the amount of jobs across sports. More teams jumping in!

If you’re looking to sharpen your applied sports analytics skills, these two competitions are worth your attention:

Syracuse Sport Analytics – Football & Basketball

Syracuse University is sharing recordings from their Football Analytics Blitz competition, now available on YouTube. The playlist walks through presentations and analytical approaches from past participants, which is extremely valuable if you want to understand how others structure their thinking, storytelling, and modeling choices.

Syracuse Sport Analytics has also opened registration for their upcoming basketball competition. Even if you don’t submit officially, you can treat the prompt as a guided project: replicate the problem, structure your workflow, document your assumptions, and publish your results.

A practical idea: watch the Blitz presentations, reverse-engineer a methodology you like, and rebuild it with your own extensions. That alone can become a strong portfolio piece.

Ohio State Sports Analytics Conference Hackathon (with SIS)

Ohio State Sports Analytics Conference is hosting a student hackathon in collaboration with Sports Info Solutions.

The prompt: evaluate how the 2023 MLB rule changes affected the value of infield defense. You can approach this from player evaluation, run prevention, positioning value, or any creative angle grounded in the data.

What makes this particularly interesting:

  • Access to proprietary SIS defensive metrics

  • Player and hit location data

  • A data dictionary and references

  • Permission to merge with public datasets

  • AI usage allowed (with citation and full methodological understanding)

Key dates:

  • Data release: March 2

  • Submission deadline: March 19

  • Finalist presentations: March 26 (online) and March 28 (in-person)

Submissions require a short (<5 minutes) video presentation, which is also great practice for communicating analytics clearly and concisely.

Even if you’re not eligible as a student, you can replicate the challenge once the data is out . Frame it as:

  • Clear research question

  • Defined evaluation metric

  • Transparent methodology

  • Reproducible code

  • Executive-level summary

That combination is exactly what hiring managers in sports analytics want to see.

If you’re serious about breaking into the field, competitions like these are more than contests, they’re structured, real-world case studies. Treat them as portfolio accelerators.
