This edition I bring you recent jobs as always but also a really nice article from The Economist (and a tweet summary ) explaining how bookmakers (the betting houses) profile the players to increase their margin by limiting the winning players and squeezing the losers. It’s a whole world (love it or hate it) where the analytics and the math are a must. A bookmaker with bad data, taking bad decisions will go bankrupt. Not covered here but how do they price the matches is also super interesting. Let me know if you want more info about all this.

The battle to stop clever people betting

I encourage to read the article here (this link avoids the paywall) but I’ll give view a preview of the tweet which is a super nice summary with bullet points that stay in your mind quickly and they have some hook.

Did you know bookmakers actually block gamblers who win? It’s quite funny, you can play as long as you lose. You can bypass the digital bouncer but you have to start hacking the system. It’s done so the house always wins. Not a surprise right?

Personally I used to do sports betting arbitrage (when you bet on both teams to win in different bookmakers, say Bet365 and Pinnacle, and because they price the match so differently you make a profit independently of the match result.

The issue that I found back then, is that if you ended up winning a few bets on the same bookmaker, I was limited. And those winnings were by pure luck because I didn’t care which team won, but if I had a few in a row in the same shitty bookmaker then limits appeared. It was quite fun and a bit frustrating, but you can squeeze it and be smart about where you put your bets. Pinnacle is one of the best in that sense, they claim they don’t limit anyone ad encourage people to bet smart. One of a kind.

▫️In 2025, 4.3% of active UK accounts had a “stake factor” below the maximum bet allowance of 100%.

▫️Sportsbook will take bets with a profit margin as low as 4.5%.

▫️If they are able to do good “player-profiling” and keep the “sharps” from playing, the profit margin can reach 10-20%.

▫️As important as keeping out “sharps” is hooking “whales”, the deep-pocketed players that are willing to keep playing (and losing) large sums.

▫️Some “whales” are actually “sharps” in disguise, though. They’ll lose a bunch of bets to lull the sportsbook then put down a massive bet when they have an edge.
