Too many clubs think data = collecting every dataset under the sun. Wyscout, StatsBomb, Opta, GPS, tracking, cloud dashboards, AI… and still no competitive edge. The problem it’s starting with data instead of starting with a plan.

I’m sharing an article from David Sumpter, writer of Soccermatics among many other books.

He highlights a common trap inside football organisations: they gather huge amounts of data without knowing what decisions it should guide. Clubs subscribe to multiple analytics platforms, buy tracking and GPS, hire a data scientist, and hope a magical dashboard or AI model will make everything click. It rarely does.

In his article he explain that a plan is necessary and he links to others resources showing how specifics teams such as Ajax, Arsenal or Minnesota in the MLS have used data with a specific purpose successfully.
