Did you know Kristaps Porziņģis transformed his game and career trajectory by embracing analytics?
Once viewed through a skeptical lens for his post-up plays with the Dallas Mavericks, Porziņģis took an analytical deep dive, turning numbers into his strongest allies.
His story is a fascinating journey from being considered inefficient in certain aspects of his game to becoming a cornerstone for the Boston Celtics, all thanks to his willingness to trust the data.
Imagine Porziņģis, towering at 7-foot-2, previously struggling in post-ups, now delivering one of the most efficient seasons in NBA history in that very play type. His transformation involved a meticulous examination of his game, focusing on leveraging his height and soft touch near the basket to maximize efficiency. He stripped away about 50% of his game, focusing only on moves and spots where the numbers showed he was most effective.
The big man didn’t just work on his own; he teamed up with a close friend and dove into the insights provided by basketball analytics guru Dean Oliver. This collaboration led to tangible changes in his game: Porziņģis reduced the number of dribbles before making a move, focused on shooting from spots where he was historically efficient, and even adjusted his physical training to maintain agility over bulk. These adjustments weren’t minor; they were a complete overhaul of his approach, guided by the clear, objective voice of analytics.
Porziņģis' story is a powerful reminder that in sports, embracing data can lead to groundbreaking improvements. It's about more than just refining skills; it's about a mindset shift, a readiness to reinvent oneself based on what the numbers reveal.
As Porziņģis gears up for new playoff challenges with the Celtics, his journey from being seen as a post-up liability to becoming a dominant force is an inspiring example of how athletes can evolve.
His tale isn't just about overcoming obstacles; it's a testament to the transformative power of analytics in sports, proving that with the right data and a willingness to adapt, the possibilities are limitless.

What’s NIL and how it started?
College sports are undergoing a major shift, all because of one important question: Should college athletes be paid?
In June 2021, the NCAA responded by implementing an interim policy on name, image and likeness, or NIL, allowing student-athletes to make money from their personal brand. However, it can be a bit complex to navigate.
NIL laws vary by state, meaning your state may or may not have its own NIL regulations you must adhere to. Whether high school students can participate in NIL activities depends on the rules set by your state’s high school sports association. Additionally, colleges and universities often have their own unique rules for NIL.
If you want to keep track of NIL and get the latest news on this fascinating topic I strongly recommend subscribing to NIL WIRE.
