If you want to take a look at a really cool presentation on applied sports analytics, in this case in baseball, but you have limited amount of time you definitely should  check the following video.

A lot of insights, analytics and nice looking visualizations in less than 20 minutes.

Here’s the abstract so you have an idea.

By Scott Powers and Ron Yurko

On May 10, Major League Baseball made an exciting new dataset publicly available on Baseball Savant. Using Hawk-Eye's kinematic sequence data based on computer vision, MLB's team defined two new bat-tracking metrics: bat speed and swing length (available on a pitch-by-pitch basis). They defined other metrics as well, all of which are functions of bat speed, swing length and existing ball-tracking metrics. Tantalizingly, MLB has teased that additional pitch-by-pitch metrics, such as attack angle and swing-and-miss distance, are in the pipeline.

In this presentation, I share our research on inferring batter timing from bat speed and swing length data. It turns out that within-batter variation in swing length tells us more about the batter's timing on that pitch than the batter's behavior. For the exact same swing mechanics, if the pitch takes more/less time to reach the batter (or if the swing starts earlier/later), the swing will be measured as longer/shorter. We see this most clearly when comparing the distribution of swing length for contact-swings vs. miss-swings, split by pitch type. On fastballs, swing length tends to be shorter on miss-swings because the batter tends to be late. On off-speed pitches, swing length tends to be longer on miss-swings because the batter tends to be early. Timing also affects bat speed because the measurement may take place before or after peak speed, due to timing error.

I’ve been reported that some people get the newsletter to Spam or Promotions tab.  If that happens (now or in the future) for you, you will miss any new job, update and content.

To avoid this you can:

  • Reply to this email with “hi” (or any other comment)or

  • Mark the email as safe or move the email from promotions to the inbox tab

Both should work to get all the future newsletter in your inbox as expected
