Sportsjobs online

Featured jobs, trends and recommendations to work in the sports industry.

🚀 Jobs metric: 154 new jobs in the last two weeks!! 🚀

My commitment is to keep improving that metric, that’s the current number I want to optimize.

It’s not easy to make order of magnitude improvements as the nature of this board is to find and promote the not so abundant sports analytics jobs, at least in comparison with other industries, but here we are, doing our best.

Being said that…

New  jobs is Sports

Today, I’m sending a handpicked list of 6  data science jobs recently posted in the last week. Why not 5? Because I couldn’t decide which one to drop.

The trick is to stay up to date with opportunities. Sportsjobs is the best place to do so.

Did you know there are whole books on sports analytics?

I’ll try to send a few from time to time and feel free to share some that you recommend so I can add them to the list:

Our list (first edition)

1) Basketball Beyond Paper - Dean Oliver

A pioneer in the field of basketball analytics, Dean Oliver introduced a framework to understand basketball through the use of statistics in his book Basketball on Paper. In his follow-up, Basketball beyond Paper, Oliver lays out both the technical and personal aspects of his twenty-year experience in the NBA as he helped build the analytics that changed the game. He also looks at the people and technology that pushed those analytics forward.Oliver tells stories of how the insights came about, whether studying other teams or witnessing events with players, coaches, and management of his own teams. He highlights how great LeBron James and Steph Curry have been but also how critical “middle-class” or “glue” players such as Shane Battier, Andre Iguodala, and JJ Redick were to their teams. Oliver illustrates the paths taken by Most Improved Player Award winners such as Lauri Markkanen, Julius Randle, and Brandon Ingram. Basketball beyond Paper tells the stories of how analytics have helped basketball players, coaches, and management—and changed the game.

A Guide to Building Your Own Full-Stack Sports Analytics Website

I can’t add too much on this but sharing the actual link to this guy’s tutorial that works for the Boston Red Sox. This guy is Neil Pierre Louis.

It covers everything from Data, Pipelines,  Backend, Frontend, Git, Design, etc. And has links to many other resources to keep diving. This is one of those incredible resources that go under the radar and that I’m super excited to share with you.

His own words mention that this could be a great portfolio project for anyone, you don’t need to follow exactly what he does but getting inspiration and a proven work path as guideline. Remember, Neil actually works for a huge team, so his word is super valuable.

And a quote from his intro to motivate you.

This guide is meant to be a comprehensive resource for those who are interested in full-stack web development for sports analytics. It will be primarily based on my project, PierreAnalytics, a hockey analytics website I started at the end of my senior year of college that was inspired by Baseball Savant. Whether you’re looking to build a platform to show off on your portfolio or for a side project, I think this type of project is a fantastic opportunity for several reasons.
